What this tool does

It traces a JPG bitmap into vector shapes and writes a real SVG file. The result is editable in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma and scales without pixelation — within the limits of what tracing can do, which the section below is honest about.

About JPG

JPEG (files end in .jpg or .jpeg — they are the same thing) is the 1992 lossy photo format that every camera, phone and website understands. It throws away detail the eye is bad at seeing, which is why a photo can be 10× smaller than as PNG while looking identical at normal viewing sizes. It is good for photographs and anything photo-like, email attachments, marketplaces and forms that demand .jpg, and situations where compatibility matters more than anything; less good for text, line art, screenshots and logos (the compression smears sharp edges into visible "ringing"), and anything that needs transparency — JPEG has none. Universal, and the safest choice when a form, portal or older program insists on a specific format.

About SVG

SVG is not a grid of pixels at all: it is an XML text file describing shapes, paths and text, which the viewer draws at whatever size is needed. That is why a logo as SVG stays razor-sharp on a billboard and a watch face alike, and why a 5 KB SVG can replace a 500 KB PNG. It is good for logos, icons, illustrations, diagrams and anything that must scale or be edited as shapes; less good for photographs — a photo can only be "traced" into vector shapes, which gives a posterised, painterly result, not the original. All browsers and design tools; some CMSs, social networks and office programs refuse SVG uploads (and it is not safe to accept from strangers because it can contain scripts).

What changes going from JPG to SVG

  • Metadata: EXIF (camera, date, GPS) is not carried over — the browser decodes pixels, not tags. That is a privacy plus for sharing and a minus if you rely on dates in the file.

Photos don't vectorise

Be honest with yourself about the input: tracing works for logos and simple graphics, and a JPEG of a logo is fine (expect slightly rougher edges because of JPEG noise). A JPEG photograph will come out as a stylised poster with a few dozen flat colours — sometimes a nice effect, never a faithful copy. Images over 1024 px are traced at reduced size to keep the browser responsive.

How to trace JPG to SVG

Frequently asked questions

Is my JPG file uploaded?

No. The page is static and has no upload endpoint; your browser does the work on your own device and the result is saved straight back to your disk. The site's Content-Security-Policy only allows it to talk to its own origin, so it cannot send your file anywhere even by accident. Load the page, disconnect from the internet, and it still works.

Does JPG to SVG lose quality?

Tracing is an approximation: flat-colour logos and icons come out clean; photos and gradients are posterised into a limited set of colours. It is not a pixel-exact copy by design.

Will transparency survive?

JPG has no transparency to begin with, so there is nothing to lose; the SVG output is fully opaque, exactly like the source.

Is it free? Any limits or watermark?

Free, no account, no watermark, no daily quota. Because nothing runs on our servers there is nothing to meter. The only limits are your device's memory — anything up to roughly 50 megapixels is fine on a modern phone or laptop.

Can I do several files at once?

One file at a time at the moment — drop the next one as soon as you have downloaded the first. Batch processing with a ZIP in and out is planned.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes — iPhone, iPad and Android browsers all run it. Large files take a few seconds longer on a phone than on a laptop.
